Thrift Store Dresser Makeover

You might’ve seen me post a pic of this little beauty a while back on Facebook. And I might’ve promised that I’d show you the finished product in just a few short days, remember?

Well, that was like two weeks ago. I know, I lied. I’m sorry! But you’ll forgive me, right? It’s not like I lied on purpose, it’s just that between our trip to Florida, catching up with the kiddos and the mountains of laundry that seems to accumulate after a trip, surely you can understand?

The important thing is, it’s finally finished! And… I kinda love it.

I found this dresser at a local thrift store for $35, whoa! While I’m sure some people are drooling over this vintage 70s makeover it was given, it’s umm, really not my style.

But I know better than to judge a book by its cover.

So, I bought it. Getting it into my car however, was a whole other story. I’ll spare you the details, but lets just say finagling a dresser into a station wagon with a double BOB stroller (you know, those strollers the size of a small SUV) and two car seats was nothing short of comical. Just ask the two burly construction guys who helped me. God bless ’em. And their muscles.

The first task for this dresser was giving it a good sanding. I knew I wanted to paint the dresser white and have a wood stained top. Fifteen minutes later of sanding and I realized the top was a laminate veneer finish. That was 15 minutes of my life I won’t get back.

I removed the top. Applied primer, then painted white. (Sorry I don’t have more ‘in process’ pics, I got too involved and forgot. Oops).

To create the top, I used three 2×6″ cedar boards. I made the top the same way I did for our laundry room countertop, which means I also got to use my favorite tool ~ the kreg jig!

I stained it with Minwax driftwood stain and applied two protective polycrylic coats to the whole dresser.

I swapped out the hardware and it was finished! Did you notice the open shelving?! I can’t wait to show you how easy it was to do!

Have you hit the jackpot at thrift stores recently? I’d love if you shared your great finds!

    • Hi Deedra, thanks so much! Hmmm, the most challenging part was removing the old top of the dresser as some screws were stripped. But…a little patience and some elbow grease, and it was done!
