Ikea Rast Dresser – Take Two

It wasn’t too long ago I finished my first hack of this Ikea rast dresser, but today I’m sharing its second life with you. It used to live in our kitchen, but never fit the space very good, and so when we started talking of updating our 3 year old son’s room into a ‘big boy’ room I knew just the place for it!

While we aren’t anywhere near ready to reveal his room I can give you a little peek of the updated dresser, which I plan to use as a nightstand!

In his room there’s a mural I painted while I was pregnant and although it’s a little on the baby-ish side, I just cannot bring myself to paint over it yet. I’m fully aware that someday I will have to, but for now we are pretending that day doesn’t exist.

I wanted to tie the dresser into the mural somehow so I came up with a really simple design.

I liked the original finish, you can see how I did that here, so I kept that and just added to it.

I started by finding the center point between the drawer pulls and used painters tape to create the trunk of the tree.

I painted it white and let dry before moving onto the branches.

Once dried, I removed the tape and started applying new tape for the branches. I wasn’t too concerned about getting the spacing or sizing perfectly the same (Because do you know of any trees that are symmetrical? I don’t). So I just started applying tape at a random angle, attempting to keep the base of the branches just a bit wider than the ends.

When I was satisfied, I painted those white too. Luckily, I had the leftover paint from his mural (I knew I’d been hanging onto it for 3 years for some reason!) and painted on the green and orange leaves.

When the paint was completely dry I applied a protective coat of polyurethane and it was finished! So easy And all it took was a few hours of my morning, that’s my kind of project!

I can’t wait to get it in his room and put it to use! But for now, I’ve got some packing to finish because this girl and her husband are headed off to sunny Florida in two days! Warm weather, blue skies and sand in my toes….only two more sleeps!

  5. So cute. I love how it is also pretty gender neutral.

I wonder if this would be big enough to be used as a dresser/changing table combination?

We don’t have an Ikea around where I live, so I’ve never actually seen an Ikea item in person (a tragedy, I know)

Thanks so much for sharing at Talented Tuesday Link Party, hope to see you again this week!

    • Hi Kristina! Unfortunately, this is a pretty small dresser so it wouldn’t fit a changing pad. I think the dimensions are something like 24″ x 27″. But, that’s what we did with our kids…just used dresser tops as our changing tables! Way more practical if you ask me :)

  6. Love the finish and the graphic! Very cute and kid-appropriate but still fresh and modern! I will look forward to seeing the finished room!
